Edwards Air Force Base – Weapon Systems Officer Maj. Alexander Davis Killed in B-52 Stratofortress Crash

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, California — Major Alexander Davis was officially identified by military officials as one of the eight crew members tragically killed when a B-52 Stratofortress crashed shortly after takeoff during a routine test mission at Edwards Air Force Base on Monday.

 

Major Davis, 34, served as a highly trained Weapon Systems Officer (WSO) assigned to the 419th Flight Test Squadron, a specialized unit operating under the 412th Test Wing at Edwards Air Force Base. As a WSO, Major Davis was responsible for aircrew integration, weapons targeting, and electronic countermeasures, playing a critical role in the complex flight testing operations of the U.S. Air Force’s strategic bomber fleet. A resident of Lancaster, California, he was deeply embedded in the local aerospace and military community.

The fatal accident occurred during the early phases of a routine developmental test flight. Shortly after launching from the Edwards airfield, the B-52 Stratofortress encountered catastrophic flight conditions, resulting in the crash that claimed the lives of all eight personnel on board, including active-duty airmen, reservists, and civilian defense contractors. First responders and emergency medical units deployed immediately to the crash site, but there were no survivors.

Col. Thomas Tauer, Commander of the 412th Test Wing, issued a statement expressing profound grief on behalf of the installation, describing Major Davis and his crewmates as dedicated professionals, beloved family members, and irreplaceable teammates. The 419th Flight Test Squadron has established specialized support teams to assist Major Davis’s family, colleagues, and loved ones through this period of sudden, devastating loss.

The main airfield at Edwards Air Force Base remains closed to all non-essential traffic as recovery operations proceed. An Interim Safety Investigation Board has assumed control of the site to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the mechanical, structural, and environmental factors that contributed to the crash.
